Pool Closing

Secure your pool for the off-season with our Pool Closing Guide, an essential step-by-step guide to maintaining your pool’s water quality through the colder months. Here, you will find detailed instructions to guide you through the entire closing process. The ideal time to close your pool varies depending on your specific location and climate. Try to close your pool when the water temperature consistently drops below 65°F.

  1. Test and Balance water. Use the “Test” section of the app to test Alkalinity, pH and Calcium Hardness and adjust them to the ideal range if necessary. These levels must be balanced to protect your pool surfaces and equipment from damage during winter. Other parameters will be addressed later.
  2. Give your pool a final clean. Skim the water's surface and empty the skimmer baskets.
  3. Brush the walls, floor and steps of the pool.
  4. Vacuum the pool according to your owner's manual.
  5. Backwash and clean your filter to remove build up, once complete return the filter to normal mode. Always follow your filter manufacturer’s instructions.

Follow closing kit instructions as directed.
  8. Discontinue the use of chlorine. This includes stopping any chlorinator or removing chlorine tablets.
  9. Lower the pool water level to 4-6 inches below the skimmer, unless using an automatic cover. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
  10. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to drain water from the pump and filter. Fully drain and disconnect all equipment and protect any underground pool lines (follow manufacturer instructions).
  11. Blow out the lines, use a shop vac or air compressor to blow out the water from the plumbing lines, follow manufacturers instructions. Add antifreeze if needed.
  12. Clean and store all removable items such as ladders, skimmer baskets and other accessories in a dry place.
  13. Install winter plugs and use a skimmer guard to prevent ice damage if required.
